Traditionally used for Engagement in the Highlands Hand Fasting is the most well known ceremony. Today many people use it at their marriage ceremony not knowing that it was traditionally used only for engagements. The Hand Fast was typically done 1 year before a Marriage Ceremony. This allowed the couple to see how well they got along. After a year they could either get married or walk away. Some folks use Tartan others have community present them with various ribbons an cords, others have a professional weaver make them a piece. The result is a loosely tied piece of art all too unique to describe and based on material and amount of participants.
